When you feel a bump on your gums, it can be worrying. You might ask yourself how it got there or what you should do about it. There are several causes that may lead to these bumps. Some are more concerning than others, but having your emergency dentist take a look is likely the way to go. Here are five reasons why you may have gum bumps and why you should visit your dentist as soon as possible.
#1 Fibroma
Fibroma is among the most common causes of bumps on your gums. They’re noncancerous, hard, and smooth. Also, they are typically painless! They form on irritated or injured gum tissue, so if you have retainers, Invisalign, or even dentures, you are at a higher risk. Fibromas can go away on their own, but if they are larger and causing discomfort, they can be surgically removed. They can look and feel similar to other bump-causing issues, so it’s recommended to have them checked for your peace of mind.
#2 Canker Sore
Canker sores can also be a cause of bumps on your gums. They’re small, white spots that have a red border. Unfortunately, they can be pretty painful, but they are harmless and can heal on their own! Typically, in one to two weeks, you can pretend like you never had one.
#3 Oral Cyst
If you have a small fluid-filled bump, it could be an oral cyst. It can also be filled with air or other soft materials, and most oral cysts form around the roots of dead teeth or impacted teeth. They can be painful, and you may feel some pressure around the tooth. If left untreated, it can even weaken your jaw or cause teeth to move.
There are many types of oral cysts, so it’s important to have them examined to rule out anything serious.
#4 Dental Abscess
A gum bump, combined with severe discomfort, sensitivity, or swelling, may be signs of a dental abscess. This is a serious infection in your tooth that requires urgent dental care. If left untreated, it can result in tooth loss and a weakened jawbone and may even spread throughout the rest of your mouth and body. If you have a painful bump on your gums accompanied by other signs of infection, call your emergency dentist right away!
#5 Oral Cancer
Oral cancer can sometimes be a cause of bumps on the gums, though it is less common than other conditions like fibromas or cysts. They can be painful red or white bumps. Another symptom is difficulty swallowing and a sore throat. While it can be scary to think of having oral cancer, it’s important to let your dentist know about any bumps in your gums and any symptoms you notice. Early detection can dramatically increase your chances of a successful treatment.
Most bumps on your gums are generally harmless. They can go away on their own, but they can always indicate something more serious. If you have a persistent gum bump or want reassurance, it’s always best to let your dentist examine it.
