Do you get anxious about going to the dentist? Is there a way to make your appointments easier? You may wonder, “What is sedation dentistry and will it help me?” This is a great option for those with anxiety, as it gives you a calming sensation during your visit. However, many people question the feeling it gives, so they can better understand what to expect. Continue reading to learn more about dental sedation and how it can allow you to get the care you need.
What Is Dental Sedation?
Three main types of sedation can be given to you during your appointment: nitrous oxide, oral conscious, and intravenous (IV). Depending on your treatment, your dentist will recommend one based on the appropriate strength and your level of anxiety. Each one is administered differently, but you will be conscious for each one. While some give a deeper state of relaxation that you may fall asleep, your dentist will be able to wake you up easily.
What Do the Types of Sedation Feel Like?
Since each form is different, here is what you can expect with the different types of sedation available:
- Nitrous Oxide: Also known as laughing gas, you inhale this one. Your dentist will put a mask over your nose and have you breathe normally. It’s a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen, which makes you more relaxed. Many people say that they feel lighter or “euphoric”, which helps them feel more at ease. This form is typically given for routine cleanings and checkups.
- Oral Conscious: Your dentist will prescribe you a medication that you need to take before your appointment. This gives you a deeper state of relaxation than the one above, with people saying they experience a heavy feeling. If you have more anxiety, this option may be recommended because it’s stronger.
- IV Sedation: This is the most powerful form as it is administered directly into your bloodstream. It gives you the greatest state of relaxation, which is why many people tend to fall asleep! Your dentist will have someone closely monitor you and adjust the dosage depending on what you need. This form is best for more complicated procedures or extreme anxieties.
Even though the last two are much stronger than laughing gas, you will still be conscious during all three. You will be able to follow directions and answer questions that your dentist asks you. Additionally, oral conscious and IV sedation require you to be driven to and from your appointment.
The best way to know which one will work for you during your upcoming appointment is to talk to your dentist! They will listen to your fear and find the right solution that allows you to get the care you deserve.
