Are you headed on a trip soon? While you have gotten into the routine of maintaining your Invisalign treatment at home, it can quickly become difficult when you are traveling to another place. Staying on track with your treatment is necessary for you to achieve the straighter smile that you have been hoping for in the best possible time frame. Here are some tips to help you keep up with Invisalign while you are on your trip.

Pack Accordingly

Hopefully, you always bring essential dental tools with you when you go on a trip. When you have Invisalign, this is especially crucial. You need to be able to keep both your teeth and clear aligners clean. Among your normal toiletries, be sure to bring along a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, your Invisalign case, and other special tools that you se to clean your aligners. Make a list or make a list on your phone so you don’t forget anything as you pack.

Maintain a Routine

As much as you want to completely let go of all of your responsibilities when you are on vacation, you need to maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine, particularly if you have Invisalign. Remember to continue brushing your teeth at least twice a day and always floss at night. Try to keep your aligners in for at least 22 hours each day. For some people, it helps to set a timer while eating and drinking so you know you aren’t falling behind.

Be Careful of Tap Water

Depending on where you are going, you may or may not be able to safely drink the tap water. If you can’t drink it, you don’t want to use it to brush your teeth or rinse your aligners. If you are in doubt, you should brush your teeth using bottled water instead.

Bring Extra Aligners

If you are going to be gone for a few weeks, chances are that you might need to move on t your next set of aligners to stay on track. It is a good idea to take them with you. If you decide to extend your stay, you won’t need to stress about keeping up with your treatment.

Have a Pre-Vacation Appointment

Has it been some time since your last progress check? If so, it might be a good idea to schedule your next one before your trip. If you have recently been in, give your dentist a call to let them know that you are going to be out of town. This way, they can provide you with any additional advice that you may need.

Your Invisalign treatment shouldn’t hold you back when you travel. By using the tips listed above, you can stay on top of your treatment and still enjoy your trip.

About the Author

Dr. Les Latner earned his dental doctorate from the Washington University School of Dental Medicine.

Toothpicks are a common tool people reach for after meals to remove food stuck between their teeth. While they can be helpful in certain situations, using them regularly—or improperly—can pose risks to your oral health. So, are toothpicks bad for your teeth? The answer depends on how you use them.

The Convenience of Toothpicks

Toothpicks are small, portable, and easy to use, making them a quick solution when something is lodged between your teeth. In the absence of floss, they can help dislodge larger food particles and provide temporary relief.

However, convenience doesn’t always mean they’re the best option for maintaining long-term oral health.

Potential Risks to Your Gums

One of the biggest concerns with toothpicks is the potential for gum damage. Their pointed tips can easily irritate or injure delicate gum tissue if used too forcefully.

Repeated irritation can lead to inflammation and may increase the risk of gum disease over time. Bleeding gums are often an early sign that the tissue is being damaged or is already inflamed.

Impact on Tooth Alignment

Frequent use of toothpicks—especially when applying pressure—can gradually push teeth apart. This can create small gaps where food becomes more likely to get stuck, making the problem worse instead of better.

Over time, this habit may even affect how your teeth fit together.

Risk of Damage and Breakage

Wooden toothpicks can splinter or break during use, leaving small fragments lodged in your gums. This can cause discomfort and may require professional removal.

Additionally, aggressive use of toothpicks can scratch tooth enamel or damage dental work such as crowns or fillings.

Better Alternatives for Cleaning Between Teeth

While toothpicks may be useful occasionally, they should not replace proper oral hygiene tools. Dental floss is specifically designed to clean between teeth and remove plaque effectively.

Other options, such as interdental brushes or water flossers, can provide a safer and more thorough cleaning, especially for individuals with braces or dental restorations.

When Is It Okay to Use a Toothpick?

Using a toothpick gently and occasionally is generally safe, especially when no other tools are available. The key is to avoid applying too much pressure and to be mindful of your gums.

If you frequently find yourself needing a toothpick, it may be a sign of an underlying issue such as spacing problems or gum recession.

Toothpicks aren’t inherently bad, but they should be used with caution. Relying on dentist-recommended tools and maintaining a consistent oral hygiene routine is the best way to protect your teeth and gums. By choosing safer alternatives and using toothpicks sparingly, you can keep your smile healthy and avoid unnecessary damage.

About the Practice

Dr. Les Latner earned his dental degree from the Washington University School of Dental Medicine before completing a 2-year residency in pediatric dentistry at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth, offering long-lasting function and a natural-looking smile. If you’re considering this treatment, you might be wondering whether you qualify. While certain factors can influence candidacy, the good news is that most situations can be addressed so that patients can still receive implants.

Understanding what affects implant eligibility can help you make informed decisions and plan for successful treatment.

Key Factors That Affect Dental Implant Candidacy

Several conditions or factors may impact whether dental implants are the right option for you. Bone density and quality in the jaw is one of the most important considerations. Implants require sufficient bone to anchor securely, so patients with bone loss may need bone grafting procedures before treatment.

Oral health is another critical factor. Gum disease or untreated dental decay can interfere with implant placement. Addressing these issues through periodontal treatment or restorative care is often the first step toward becoming a candidate.

General health also plays a role. Chronic conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, certain autoimmune disorders, or habits like smoking can affect healing and implant success. However, with proper management, many patients can still proceed safely with dental implants.

Age and Lifestyle Considerations

While there is no strict age limit for dental implants, younger patients whose jaws are still growing may need to wait until growth is complete. Conversely, older adults are often good candidates as long as overall health and bone conditions are suitable.

Lifestyle factors like oral hygiene and commitment to follow-up care are essential. Patients who maintain regular dental visits and practice good at-home care tend to experience higher success rates with implants.

How Most Barriers Can Be Addressed

The encouraging news is that many obstacles to dental implant placement can be resolved. Bone grafts, sinus lifts, and guided tissue regeneration can strengthen the jawbone for secure implant support. Periodontal treatments and restorative care can manage oral health concerns before placing implants. Even lifestyle factors like smoking can often be modified to improve healing and long-term results.

By addressing these challenges, most patients can become good candidates for dental implants and enjoy the benefits of a restored, confident smile.

The Benefits of Proper Evaluation

A thorough dental evaluation is the first step in determining implant eligibility. Your dentist will review your medical history, examine your oral health, and take imaging to assess bone structure. This comprehensive assessment helps identify any potential issues and create a personalized plan to prepare you for successful implant treatment.

Understanding the process and options available ensures that most patients can move forward with confidence, even if initial concerns arise.

With proper planning and care, dental implants can restore function, appearance, and confidence, even for patients who initially face obstacles.

About the Practice

Dr. Latner of Westside Dental Associates provides expert dental care focused on restoring healthy, functional smiles.

Severe tooth pain can be the cause of advanced decay, facial trauma, or possible infection. You may be unaware of the reason for your nighttime toothache, but since you cannot call your emergency dentist until morning, you need help to get essential sleep in the meantime. What can you do to achieve relief? Here are 3 tips to help you rest throughout the night.

Consider Your Sleep Position

Try elevating your head when preparing to go to bed. You can use a thick pillow or multiple ones to keep it high so that blood does not rush to the area and cause additional pressure. The goal is to reduce discomfort and swelling, which is what you can expect when you raise your head. This will also improve circulation, preventing blood from pooling and intensifying your toothache.

Try Different Ways to Alleviate Pain

There are various products and solutions you can use to alleviate throbbing pain. While one method might work for someone else, it may not be as effective for you. The only way to find out is to try different options.

One you should consider is an over-the-counter pain reliever. By following the dosing instructions, you will notice a difference in how your tooth feels, allowing you to fall asleep more comfortably. This approach also helps reduce inflammation, but should be used only as a short-term measure.

Another option is to apply a cold compress to your cheek. This reduces swelling and helps relieve the pain and soreness you experience. You can also rinse your mouth with hot saltwater before bed to cleanse the area and minimize pain.

Learn What to Avoid

The tooth pain you’re experiencing will likely make it harder to eat acidic, spicy, hot, cold, or hard foods immediately before going to bed. The extreme temperatures and textures of these items can irritate your tooth, causing additional pain. If a cavity has formed, you can expect it to feel worse than before because of the intense inflammation.

Instead, it’s best to drink lukewarm water and eat softer, milder food options so that you don’t irritate or apply unnecessary pressure to the affected tooth.

Once you wake, do not delay in calling your emergency dentist to schedule an appointment. The sooner you seek treatment, the greater the chances you will walk away with a fully restored, healthier smile.

About the Author
Dr. Les Latner is one of fewer than 10 dentists to have earned accreditation from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and a mastership from the Academy of General Dentistry.
Hope you’re doing well! I was browsing the dental aisle at the store recently and was quite overwhelmed by the myriad of toothbrush options available! Soft, medium, electric, bamboo — it’s a veritable buffet of choices. This got me thinking, how does one pick the perfect toothbrush?

Well, finding the right toothbrush is a bit like dating (hear me out!): it’s about finding a match that’s comfortable, effective, and, most importantly, treats your gums and teeth right! Here are a few pointers:

Bristle Hardness: For most folks, a soft-bristled toothbrush is your best bet. Contrary to what you might think, medium or hard bristles don’t mean a better clean – they can actually damage your gums and enamel.

Size Matters: Pick a brush head size that easily fits in your mouth and can brush one to two teeth at a time. Your back molars send their thanks in advance!

Handle with Care: Whether you like a non-slip grip or a flexible neck, go with what feels most comfortable. If it’s comfortable, you’re more likely to brush for the recommended 2 minutes.

Manual vs. Electric: This is down to personal preference. Some folks love the efficiency of an electric toothbrush, while others appreciate the control of a manual. Fun fact: Studies show both can be equally effective if used correctly!

Eco-conscious: If you’re looking to reduce plastic waste, consider a biodegradable or bamboo toothbrush. Mother Earth will give you an appreciative nod!

💡 Golden Rule: No matter how perfect your toothbrush is, remember to replace it (or the head of your electric brush) every 3-4 months, or sooner if the bristles fray.

If you ever find yourself in a dilemma about dental products, or if you simply want to show off your brushing technique (trust me, I appreciate a good brushing demo!), don’t hesitate to get in touch. A toothbrush is an intimate part of your daily routine, and you deserve the best!

Ready for a chat or perhaps a check-up? Book an appointment, and let’s keep that smile of yours shining bright.

Working out and getting in shape are at the top of the list for many individuals who set New Year’s Resolutions. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to lose weight and be healthier, it’s essential to keep in mind that specific exercises can negatively affect your smile. Before starting your gym routine of lifting weights and high-intensity cardio, consider how to avoid dental injuries along the way.

Wear a Mouthguard to Protect Your Teeth

Tightening your jaw muscles each time you lift weights may seem helpful, but it actually wears down your teeth and places unnecessary pressure on your temporomandibular joints (TMJs). The more you do this, the greater the damage to your smile.

Ask your dentist about a custom mouthguard to protect your teeth and reduce jaw pain. The pressure will transfer to the cushioned barrier between your arches, bearing the weight that once landed on your pearly whites.

Breathe Correctly

Learning how to inhale and exhale correctly is essential. Athletes must learn to do this to sustain energy and avoid passing out or cramping. It’s also necessary to prevent dry mouth, a common condition that allows bacteria to accumulate and damage teeth and gums.

Although it may be easier to breathe in through your mouth, practice inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. This will protect your smile from harmful particles while keeping you upright and breathing well during workouts.

Trade Sports Drinks for Water

Fruity, flavorful sports drinks may claim to restore electrolytes and boost energy, but they often contain high sugar and are acidic. This means that the more you drink and allow the contents to sit on your teeth, the greater your risk of developing tooth decay and cavities. Acidity can also break down enamel, leading to sensitivity.

Instead of reaching for your favorite energy or sports drink, opt for plain water. While it may not be as exciting, it remains the most critical component of a good workout. It not only keeps you hydrated but also supports salivary gland production, helping flush your mouth and neutralize harmful acids.

As you prepare to enter the gym or go for a run, think about how you can take proper care of your smile so that you like everything you see the next time you look in the mirror.

About the Author
Dr. Les Latner is one of fewer than 10 dentists to have earned accreditation from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and a mastership from the Academy of General Dentistry. In addition to slipping and sliding all over the place, an ill-fitting denture can cause several uncomfortable complications or even put your health at risk. Here are four reasons why you should talk to your dentist if your dentures feel loose or can’t seem to stay in place. #1. Oral Sores Developing a sore spot on your lip, tongue, or inner-cheek isn’t usually a serious symptom. In most cases, the sore will go away on its own. However, repeatedly getting sores could indicate that your dentures are literally rubbing your soft oral tissues the wrong way! […]

In addition to slipping and sliding all over the place, an ill-fitting denture can cause several uncomfortable complications or even put your health at risk. Here are four reasons why you should talk to your dentist if your dentures feel loose or can’t seem to stay in place.

#1. Oral Sores

Developing a sore spot on your lip, tongue, or inner-cheek isn’t usually a serious symptom. In most cases, the sore will go away on its own. However, repeatedly getting sores could indicate that your dentures are literally rubbing your soft oral tissues the wrong way! It’s worth securing your comfort and calling your dentist in this case – especially if the sores become inflamed or you experience signs of infection.

#2. Difficulties Chewing

Imagine trying to chew your food when your teeth keep moving or falling out. You face a similar challenge when trying to eat with ill-fitting dentures! A loose set can slip off-center mid-bite, making it difficult to grind down your food. Your best option is to contact your dental team as soon as possible. That way, they can adjust your dentures, and you can go back to eating all of the delicacies you love without worries.

#3. Poorer Enunciation

Did you know that a lot of sounds in English require you to press your tongue against the back of your teeth? Some of the most-used ones are “s,” “th,” and “sh” sounds. As you might suspect, patients with wiggly dentures tend to have a harder time enunciating clearly because of this. Once your restoration has been adjusted by your dentist in Los Angeles, it will be much easier to speak without a lisp.

#4. Increased Risk of Infection

“How on earth does a loose fit increase my risk for infection?” you might be wondering. It has to do with the way dentures sit in your mouth. Normally, they form a perfectly even bite. But if they rest off-center, they can create hiding spots for bacteria, food particles, and saliva to fall into. Over time, this debris can accumulate, building up into infections like gum disease and denture stomatitis.

At the end of the day, your dentures are meant to help you with everyday oral function – not make you feel uncomfortable! If they become loose, your dentist would be happy to reline them for you so that they sit better in your mouth. Alternatively, they can provide you with an implant denture, which is a denture reinforced with titanium implant posts that are anchored to the jawbone for a even more secure hold.

Whichever solution you would prefer, remember that your dentist is there to support you and your dental wellness!

About the Author

Dr. Les Latner works hard to ensure he provides the best dental care for his patients.

If you’re considering a smile makeover treatment in Los Angeles, one question that’s probably on your mind is “How long can I expect the entire process to take?” Since a smile makeover can include many individual dental cosmetic procedures, each treatment plan is unique. In other words, your timeline will depend on a couple of different factors! Here are three that you should keep in mind.

1. Which Treatments are Included in Your Plan

As noted earlier, a smile makeover can include several procedures in just one treatment plan. Each procedure will have its own associated timeline, and the more you pour into your makeover, the longer the whole process is likely to take. For reference, here’s a list of average timelines for some of the more popular options:

Veneers – Two weeks

Bonding – One day

In-office teeth whitening – One day

Take-home teeth whitening – Two weeks

Invisalign – Between six to 12 months

Rest assured, your cosmetic dentist in Los Angeles will streamline the smile makeover process as much as possible. If two or more procedures could be completed in one appointment, they’ll gladly make these arrangements for you.

2. The Severity of Your Dental Flaws

The best way to explain this factor is with two examples. Let’s say you want an in-office whitening treatment. If your dental stains are more intense than average, then it may take more than one application to achieve the results you’re looking for. Similarly, if you’re thinking about Invisalign, severe dental misalignment could take longer than 12 months to fix.

After your cosmetic dentist performs a thorough oral exam, they’ll be able to give you a more accurate time estimation.

3. How Well You Follow Aftercare Instructions

Proper aftercare is essential for staying on-track with your smile makeover timeline! Since you might have multiple recovery periods, it’s especially important to pay close attention to any and all instructions your dentist gives you. Failing to comply could result in complications like cavities, gum disease, or cosmetic damage that will ultimately prolong your treatment.

Cosmetic dentists prioritize personalizing each treatment plan to suit a patient’s unique needs and goals. Regardless of how long your smile makeover in Los Angeles takes, you can rest assured that your dentist will work with you closely to help ensure you’ll love the results!

About the Author

Dr. Les Latner has accreditation in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and serves on the Board of Directors.
Wear your aligners diligently: Make it a priority to wear your Invisalign aligners for the recommended 20 to 22 hours each day. Taking them out only for meals and oral hygiene helps your teeth move correctly and keeps your treatment moving forward. If necessary, you can use a reminder app, like TrayMinder, to help you wear your aligners as much as necessary.

Maintain excellent oral hygiene: Brush your teeth thoroughly after every meal before putting your aligners back in. Flossing regularly is also important because it helps keep your gums healthy and prevents plaque buildup that could interfere with your progress.

Follow your dental professional’s guidance: Listen carefully to instructions from your orthodontist or dentist. If adjustments or additional accessories are recommended, complying with these directions can make a big difference in the final outcome of your treatment.

Clean your aligners every day: Rinse your aligners with lukewarm water and gently brush them using a soft toothbrush and a mild cleaning agent. Avoid using toothpaste, which may be abrasive and cause scratches. Many patients choose to use Invisalign cleaning crystals as well.

Store aligners safely when not in use: Use the provided case to reduce the risk of loss or damage. This simple habit helps you keep track of your aligners and prevents mishaps.

Avoid eating or drinking (except water) while wearing your aligners: Food and beverages can stain or damage your aligners and trap debris against your teeth. Always remove them before consuming anything other than water.

Do not skip scheduled appointments: Regular visits allow your dental provider to monitor your progress and make necessary changes. Missing appointments can delay your treatment and lead to unexpected complications.

Do not use Invisalign as a mouthguard: Although Invisalign places a barrier around your teeth, it is not a substitute for a sports mouthguard. If you play sports, you might need to take your aligners out and use a regular mouthguard or explore other orthodontic treatments.

Your time with Invisalign should not be stressful or overwhelming! Once you get into a good routine, you can be confident that your diligence will lead to a straighter, healthier, and more confident smile.

Meet the Practice

Dr. Latner is a highly accomplished dentist with decades of experience in his field.

There are plenty of good reasons to get your teeth professionally whitened by a dentist, but there is one specific instance where you might want to avoid it – at least temporarily. If you have an active case of cavities or early signs of tooth decay, it’s best to treat the issue with a tooth-colored filling before doing anything else. Keep reading to learn why cavities and teeth whitening simply don’t mix!

It Can Cause Permanent Damage

Rest assured, teeth whitening treatments are perfectly safe for healthy smiles. The bleaching agent will stay within the outer layers of your teeth, slipping past enough pours to eliminate stains without going so deep as to irritate the squishier inner layers.

The problem with cavities and tooth decay is that they break down the outer layers, and more or less chew a hole through your pearly whites. This means if you were to whiten your teeth, the bleaching agents would “fall” into the holes and damage your dental pulp and nerves. That result may not be reversible.

It Will Be Painful

Again, when teeth are healthy, a teeth whitening treatment shouldn’t cause pain. Your dentist can even make adjustments to the bleaching agents so that if you do have a history of sensitivity, you can still whiten your smile in comfort.

Remember how cavities and tooth decay can create holes that expose the inner layers of your teeth? Those inner layers are not as tough as your outer enamel. The same bleaching irritation that can cause permanent dental damage will also make the otherwise mild treatment process very painful.

No matter which teeth whitening method you decide on, it’s best to talk to your cosmetic dentist in Los Angeles and get a thorough oral exam before committing. If they see signs of cavities or decay, a quick filling will protect your inner dental layers from damage and discomfort. You’ll be much happier with your teeth whitening treatment in the long run!

About the Author

Dr. Les Latner often had cavities as a child, so he knows first-hand just how disastrous (and uncomfortable) they can be.
